MRMC — Polycam Velocity Dog Racing Example from Mark Roberts Motion Control on Vimeo.

Polycam is a patented technology for allowing a single operator to control multiple cameras simultaneously to get multiple points of view. Polycam Velocity is the a model of the system that is simplified even further, where the camera path (in this example a dog racing circuit) is pre selected and the operator simply has to control the speed of the cameras along the path. Focusing is automatic, zooms are slaved and intelligent and setup is quick and simple. Polycam Velocity works well wherever the cameras are following a predefined path, which applies to many different forms of racing events.

T Mobile Entertainment Germany from MrMoco Rentals on Vimeo.

It was back on the road to Romania for Mr Moco Rentals where we teamed up with Tony Petersen Film to produce two commercials for T Mobile Entertainment Germany. We supplied 3 different rigs that shot over 4 days, the Talos (for repeat pass moves) a high speed rig (for the slow mo elements) and an SFH-30 on a monorail (shooting time lapse shots). We shot with the Alexa and the Phantom Flex supplied by Love High Speed. See below some behind the scene footage and the completed commercials.

This week we are again back in Romania this time with the Titan arm on the Milo shooting another commercial. More on that to follow…

Motion Control Explained (MSA-20) Joystick Controller from Mark Roberts Motion Control on Vimeo.

The Joystick controller allows our heads to be directly controlled as a remote or repeat head. The Joystick console can record multiple moves and store them in its memory for later playback. The joystick is a 3-axis joystick allowing 3 axes to be controlled and additional inputs exist should the user wish to control more than 3 motors. The Joystick controller is compact and lightweight for easy transportation and can be battery powered just like the heads. It only requires a single small data lead to the head as well as power so cabling between the controller and the head is very simple.

Titan Telescopic Motion Control arm for Channel 4seven supermarket ident from MrMoco Rentals on Vimeo.

For the latest Channel 4seven ident we set the rig up on a 1.5m high platform on 36m of track. Because of the precise nature of the move required to enable the fold effect, the camera moves were prevized in Maya, then imported to the rig. See also our time lapse behind the scenes.

Titan Motion Control Telescopic Arm behind the scenes from MrMoco Rentals on Vimeo.

The Titan is the longest and only precision motion control telescopic arm in the world. In the past year we have shot a series of Channel 4seven Idents with the Titan creating a distinctive corner wrap of reality. It has taken us to out door pools, allotments and most recently to the tallest stage in Europe at WBSL to shoot a supermarket set.

Because of the precise nature of the move required to enable the fold effect, the camera moves are prevized in Maya, then imported to the rig. Using the Titan gives us the ability to get the highest reach possible.

This time lapse shows a behind the scenes on the supermarket set.

High Speed Rig Tests from MrMoco Rentals on Vimeo.

We often get asked to go around a subject at high speed. This month we were asked to create a high speed rig for a client wanting to go at over 5m/s (16’/sec) around a subject while filming with a high speed Olympus i-Speed camera. Additionally they wanted to be able to go around and around and not have to worry about cables tangling. We created what was needed and the results were pretty jaw-dropping so we thought we’d put some of the test footage online.

Standard off-the-shelf rental dolly rail was used and special dolly wheels were used to “grip” onto to the rail to stop the dolly from flying off due to centrifugal forces. Even so, everything including the rail had to be heavily weighed down to ensure nothing tried to move off during the high speed motion.

MRMC - Why Zero Backlash Gears are Important from Mark Roberts Motion Control on Vimeo.

MRMC — High Speed Testing from Mark Roberts Motion Control on Vimeo.

Recent test video showing footage of High Speed tests done with both the “Phantom Miro M320S” and the “Olympus iSpeed PL” cameras at the MRMC Workshop. Comparison done to find operational differences. MRMC high speed rigs & software used for controlling motion. Shots with grey background and red liquid, were on the smaller Phantom Miro camera with a high speed motion controlled focus pull. Other shots used no focussing hence the blurring. Shots mostly at about 250 FPS. In house tests for our own use.

Chris Cunningham jaqapparatus 1 - Audi City from MrMoco Rentals on Vimeo.

Mr Moco Rentals were honoured to be asked to work with Chris Cunningham to create his live event, Jaqapparatus for the launch of the new Audi City showroom in Mayfair. The live show consisted of two Talos Motion Control rigs fitted with cameras, powerful lasers and CO2 canisters. Our rigs are usually the ones doing the filming, but for this event the roles were flipped and the rigs were actually the ones being filmed.

We provided Chris with a 3D generated mock-up of the Talos in Maya that was then used to choreograph the two rigs in a brutal battle. The moves were imported from Maya to the rigs via Flair motion control software.

“Mounted on the robots heads are powerful lasers which they use to attack, repel and communicate with each other,” explains Cunningham, “a kind of duel, a surreal mating display which sees each machine trying to dominate the other.”

Master Talos MarkRoberts 110704 Rental from MrMoco Rentals on Vimeo.

The Talos is a medium sized rig designed for high speed portable motion control and is the first choice rig for location work where a full rig with arm is required. The Talos’ smaller foot-print allows it to be easily manoeuvred on location and is narrow enough to fit through standard doorways. Though smaller than its bigger brother the Milo, the Talos still offers a wide operating envelope.

The Talos head can be mounted over or under slung. Over-slung, a lens height of 3.4m (11ft) can be attained and a reach of just over 2m (7ft). The Talos provides axes for track, rotate, lift, pan, tilt, roll, camera, zoom, focus and iris.

The Talos is transported whole to studios or locations and can be set up and ready to shoot in under an hour. Being half the weight of the Milo yet offering the axes of a full moco rig, the Talos is an affordable option for freighting for remote shoots. Our Talos rigs are the most travelled rigs in our inventory recently shooting in South America, Middle East and all over Europe including as far as the Ukraine.

The Talos can take a wide range of camera packages from IMAX to DSLR and 3D rigs.

The whole rig can be simply controlled manually including pushing the rig along the track like a normal dolly. Moves can be recorded in Flair and frame accurately played back.

Our rigs are programmed using Flair Motion Control software, the most advanced motion control software available. Moves can be planned in 3D packages, fed into Flair and executed by our rigs. Reversely, moves programmed in Flair can be exported to 3D packages. For following live action or adding a handheld feel we have available, for Directors and DPs, handweels and pan bars (encoded Fluid head) as well as options for manual focus/zoom record and playback.

MrMoco Rentals MILO Rig from MrMoco Rentals on Vimeo.

Synonymous with “motion control rig”, the Milo is the industry’s finest moco system available, used the world over more than any other rig on the market. Its portable design, precision, repeatable high-speed movement and large operating envelope make it the ideal rig to offer Directors and DPs the most versatility to achieve their creative ideas.

The Milo gives a lens height of just over 4m (13ft) and a reach of over 3m (10ft), providing axes for track, rotate, lift, arm extension, head angle (outer arm), pan, tilt, roll, camera, zoom, focus and iris.

For additional height and reach the Milo can be used with the Titan telescopic arm giving a substantial 8.7m (28ft) lens height and 9.8m (32ft) maximum reach with 6.9m of telescoping motion. The Titan arm is the only telescopic precision motion control arm on the market.

The Milo is transported whole to studios or locations and can be set up and ready to shoot in under an hour. For shooting overseas the Milo can be packed into flight cases and freighted to any location/destination.

The Milo can take a wide range of camera packages from IMAX to DSLR and 3D rigs.
